Sean Caviston, restaurant operations manager and wine director at The Nittany Lion Inn, recently earned the designation of Certified Specialist of Wine by the Society of Wine Educators.

The rigorous Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) exam tests a candidate’s wine knowledge and mastery of key aspects of viticulture and wine production. The CSW certification is a widely respected mark of a wine professional’s commitment to personal career development and to the wine industry.

Exam topics include physiology of taste, wine composition and chemistry, viticulture and enology, the U. S. wine industry, wine etiquette and service, and food and wine pairing.

The Society of Wine Educators (SWE) is a nonprofit organization focused on providing wine and spirits education. Its mission is to set the standard for quality and responsible wine and spirits education and professional certification. Members represent a wide spectrum of wine expertise and include educators, importers, retailers, sommeliers, bartenders, culinary and hospitality professionals, wine industry media professionals, and wine enthusiasts.

The CSW designation signifies Caviston’s goal to continue to expand his knowledge of wine. Last August, he earned the title of Certified Sommelier from the American Chapter of the Court of Master Sommeliers.
